Tromsø is located in northern Norway, 350 kilometers beyond the Arctic Circle. It is often called the “Paris of the North.” When you visit, you’ll understand why the city earned this nickname. Narrow streets, colorful wooden houses, and a vibrant bar and café scene permeate every corner of the city. Tromsø is one of the most beautiful places in the world to witness the Northern Lights. During the Aurora season, which runs from September to April, the night sky transforms into shades of green and purple.
Tromsø’s iconic landmark is the Ishavskatedralen, or Arctic Cathedral, built in 1965. Its white concrete structure resembles an iceberg. Cross the bridge to the Tromsdalen side and watch as the massive glass mosaic shimmers with a different beauty in the daylight. During the Northern Lights Festival, concerts here sell out well in advance. Take the Fjellheisen cable car up to the 421-meter-high Storsteinen peak. Enjoy the view of the city, the fjords, and the snow-capped mountains from above.
When you visit, be sure to try tørrfisk, or dried cod. Vertshuset Skarven is one of the best places to enjoy this dish. You can sample local beers at Mack Brewery, the city’s northernmost brewery. Tromsø Cathedral, Norway’s largest wooden cathedral, is located here.

Tromsø Airport Langnes is located in the Langnes neighborhood on the western coast of Tromsøya Island. This airport is just 5 km from the city center. Operated by Norway’s Avinor, this airport serves approximately 3 million passengers annually. Flights from Tromsø Airport operate to Oslo, Bergen, Bodø, Finnmark, London, Frankfurt, Munich, Copenhagen, Stockholm, Helsinki, and Brussels.
Tromsø Airport has two terminals. These two terminals are located in the same building. You can reach the city center by bus from the airport. The Flybussen stop is right across from the terminal. The bus ride to the city center takes 15 minutes. City bus lines 40 and 42 also operate from in front of the terminal to the city center. The taxi stand is located just outside the terminal building.

Tromsø Airport Terminal
There are two terminals at Tromsø Airport. Both terminals are located in the same building. The terminal building has two floors. The ground floor of the terminal is the arrivals area. This floor features baggage claim carousels, a customs area, and a currency exchange office. ATMs belonging to Nordea Bank are located next to the check-in area. The first floor of the terminal is designated for departing passengers. Check-in counters, baggage drop-off points, and the security checkpoint are located on this floor. After passing through security, there are gates for both domestic and international flights.
Terminal A is used for international flights to Schengen countries and destinations outside the Schengen Area. Check-in counters are located on the first floor of the building. After passing through security, you walk to the gate area. Inside the terminal, there are duty-free shops, a café, and a snack bar.
Terminal B is used for domestic flights to Oslo, Bergen, Bodø, and other Norwegian cities. After security, there are restaurants and cafés.
Tromsø Airport Car Rental
Car rental offices at Tromsø Airport are located inside the terminal building. The offices are located near the check-in and arrivals areas on the first floor. Inside the terminal, there are offices for Avis, Sixt, Europcar, Hertz, Budget, and Enterprise. You can rent your car immediately after collecting your luggage. Rental cars are located in the airport parking lot. You can rent a car online before your trip. Demand for rental cars is very high during peak seasons.
There are plenty of places to explore by car in Tromsø. Winter tires are mandatory on all vehicles during the winter months. Rental cars are also provided with winter tires. Head northwest from Tromsø and explore the island of Kvaløya. There are excellent spots on the island for viewing the Northern Lights. After leaving the airport, you’ll reach Sommarøy Island after about an hour’s drive. The distance is approximately 65 kilometers. This road, which runs along the fjords, offers some of Norway’s most beautiful coastal views.
