The heart of Trondheim is Nidaros Cathedral. Construction of this Gothic masterpiece, a medieval cathedral, began in 1070 over the tomb of St. Olav. The stone carvings on the west facade are highly detailed. The Bakklandet district across the river is the place that best captures the city’s spirit. Cross the wooden Gamle Bybro bridge, built in 1681, enter through the red “Gate of Happiness,” and lose yourself among the colorful wooden buildings.

When it comes to dining, Trondheim exceeds expectations. Here, you’ll find a wide range of restaurants, from Michelin-starred establishments to fish restaurants along the Nidelva River.
Restaurant Credo’s seasonal tasting menu is particularly recommended for fans of Nordic cuisine. Be sure to have a glass of aquavit before you leave.

Trondheim Airport Map

Trondheim Airport, Værnes, is located approximately 20 km from the city center. This airport is situated in the village of Værnes within the boundaries of Stjørdal Municipality. Trondheim Airport is Norway’s third-busiest airport. Approximately 4 million passengers use this airport each year.

There are flights from Trondheim Airport to domestic destinations in Norway such as Oslo, Bergen, Stavanger, Tromsø, and Bodø. Direct flights to international destinations like Copenhagen, Stockholm, and Amsterdam are also available. Charter flights also provide connections to Mediterranean destinations. Trondheim Airport offers flights to 15 domestic, 15 international, and 18 charter destinations.

You can reach the city center from Trondheim Airport in the shortest time by train. The train station is located directly inside the terminal building. You can walk to the platform as soon as you collect your luggage. The train, operated by SJ Norge, reaches Trondheim Sentrum station in approximately 35 minutes. You can also reach the city center from the airport by bus. The Værnesekspressen departs from the domestic arrivals hall. The bus reaches Trondheim city center in 35-40 minutes. Taxi stands are located right in front of the terminal.

Trondheim Airport Terminal

Trondheim Airport has two terminals: Terminal A and Terminal B. Both terminals are within walking distance of each other.

Terminal A serves domestic flights. You will use this terminal for flights to Oslo, Bergen, Stavanger, and other Norwegian cities. Check-in counters are located on the ground floor of the terminal. After passing through security, you will reach the gate area. Terminal A has a jetway. This means you board your flight without going outside.

Terminal B is the airport’s main terminal. This terminal is used for international flights. The terminal is divided into two separate sections for Schengen and non-Schengen flights. Passengers traveling within the Schengen area reach the Schengen exit gates via a short corridor after check-in and security. For non-Schengen flights, after passing through passport control, you enter a separate departure area. There is no jet bridge at Terminal B. You board the plane via apron buses.

International passengers proceed through the Customs area and walk along a long corridor to reach the domestic arrivals hall. Both terminals feature cafes and dining areas, currency exchange offices, and a pharmacy.

Trondheim Airport Car Rental

Car rental offices at Trondheim Airport are located just outside the terminal building. The car rental companies are housed in a separate building to the right of the terminal. Exit the terminal with your luggage and cross the road. You will see the small building in front of the parking lot immediately to your right. All car rental companies have offices in this building.

Avis, Hertz, Europcar, Sixt, Alamo, National, and Enterprise provide services at Trondheim Airport. After completing your car rental process, you will receive your keys. You can pick up your vehicle from the parking lot of the same building. You can rent a car online before your trip. This way, you can rent a car at a more affordable price.

There are plenty of routes to explore by car in and around Trondheim. The E6 highway runs right past the airport, taking you to Trondheim city center in 30 minutes and to Røros further south in about 2.5 hours. The E14 extends westward and connects to the Swedish border and Östersund. Head from the airport to Trondheim city center to visit Nidaros Cathedral and Bakklandet. Then head south to visit the wooden mining town of Røros.

Scandic Hell is approximately 1 kilometer from Trondheim Airport. The hotel offers a free shuttle service to guests. This hotel is quite close to the town of Stjørdal. The hotel features a restaurant, a swimming pool, and a fitness center.

Quality Airport Hotel Værnes and Sure Hotel by Best Western Trondheim Airport are located in the town of Stjørdal. These two hotels are a few kilometers from the airport. Both hotels have a restaurant, a café, and a garden.
