Oakland International Airport (OAK) is located in Alameda County, California, on the eastern shore of San Francisco Bay. It is approximately 10 miles (16 km) from the city center. This airport is operated by the Port of Oakland. You can easily reach the airport from the Hegenberger Road or 98th Avenue exits on I-880 (Nimitz Freeway).

There are two terminals at the airport: Terminal 1 and Terminal 2. These terminals are mainly used for domestic flights and some international flights to Mexico and Europe. You can walk between the terminals.

There are two separate terminal buildings at the airport. Both terminals are within walking distance of each other. There is a connection between the terminals.

Terminal 1: Airlines such as Alaska Airlines, Allegiant Air, Azores Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Frontier Airlines, Hawaiian Airlines, Spirit Airlines, Sun Country Airlines, Swoop, and Volaris use this terminal. Terminal 1 has 17 boarding gates (1-17). The lower level of the terminal has baggage claim carousels and ground transportation (taxi, shuttle, rideshare) vehicles. The upper level of the terminal has check-in counters, security checkpoints, boarding gates, food and beverage, and shopping areas.

Terminal 2: Southwest Airlines’ main hub is located in this terminal. All gates (20-32) in the terminal are used by Southwest Airlines. Terminal 2 has 13 boarding gates. The lower level of the terminal has baggage claim areas and ground transportation vehicles. The upper level has check-in, security, boarding gates, food and beverage, and shopping areas.

Parking Areas

There are parking areas at Oakland International Airport.

Premier Parking: This is the closest parking area to Terminals 1 and 2. It has covered and open parking areas. It is suitable for short- and long-term parking. Fee: $4 per 30 minutes, maximum $38 per day.

Hourly Parking: Located directly across from Terminal 1. Designed for short-term parking (passenger drop-off/pick-up). Fee: $3 USD per 30 minutes, with a maximum daily rate of $34 USD.

Daily Parking: Within walking distance of the terminals. If you plan to leave your vehicle in the parking lot for several days, this is the recommended option. Fee: $3 USD per 30 minutes, with a daily maximum of $24 USD.

Economy Parking: The most affordable parking option. The terminals are a bit further away, but there is a free shuttle service between the terminals and the parking lot. Fee: $18 USD per day.

Park & Call Zone: You can use this area if you are waiting for a passenger at the airport. Waiting in this area for more than 30 minutes is prohibited. It is free of charge.

Electric vehicle charging stations are available in the Premier, Daily, and Economy parking areas. You can pay by credit card (Visa, MasterCard, AmEx, Discover) or cash. Online reservations are available.

Car Rental at the airport

All car rental companies at Oakland Airport have counters and vehicles at the Car Rental Center. You can reach the car rental center from the terminals in 7 minutes with a free shuttle. Shuttles depart every 10 minutes from the stops outside the terminals.

The Car Rental Center includes companies such as Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, Fox, Hertz, National, Sixt, and Thrifty. Offices are generally open 24 hours a day, every day of the week. However, hours may vary by company. After renting your car, you can pick it up from the Car Rental Center parking lot.

Find transportation from the airport – bart, tax, rideshare

BART Oakland Airport Connector: This is a free train service that runs between the airport and the Coliseum/Oakland Airport BART station. Trains depart every 10 minutes. The journey time is 7 minutes. Shuttle stops are located outside both terminals.

BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit): You can easily reach San Francisco and Berkeley with BART.

AC Transit: Bus routes 73 and 805 (night route) are operated by AC Transit. They transport passengers from the airport to East Oakland and Coliseum BART station. Bus stops are located outside Terminal 1.

Rideshare: Services such as Uber and Lyft are widely available at OAK. Pickup points are located outside each terminal in designated areas.

Taxis: Taxi stands are located at the exit of each terminal.

VIP Lounge at Oakland Airport

Escape Lounge The Centurion Studio Partner (Terminal 1, opposite Gate 8A): Open from 5:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Certain credit card holders (American Express Platinum) have complimentary access to the lounge. If you do not have a valid card for the lounge area, you can gain access by paying 45 USD. Snacks, beverages, Wi-Fi, and workspaces are available.

Delta Sky Club: Located in Terminal 2, this lounge area is accessible with a Delta flight or Sky Club membership. It offers spacious seating areas, TV, snacks, drinks, and Wi-Fi. It is open from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Lost & Found

If you lose an item in the airport terminals, parking lots, or shuttle buses, you should contact the Oakland International Airport Lost and Found office. The office is located on the second floor of Terminal 1. It is open weekdays from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Items lost at TSA security checkpoints are directed to the TSA Lost and Found office. The office is open weekdays from 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM.

ATM at Oakland Airport

There are ATMs belonging to various banks in the terminal building. These ATMs are available 24/7.

Smoking Areas

Smoking is strictly prohibited in the terminal building, including electronic cigarettes, in all enclosed areas. Passengers who wish to smoke must exit the terminal building and use the designated outdoor smoking areas located a certain distance from the arrivals (lower level) and departures (upper level) exits. These areas are clearly marked and easy to find.

Duty Free at Airport

Operated by Hudson at the airport, the duty-free store is located in Terminal 1, immediately after Security Checkpoint, next to Gate 1. The store sells alcoholic beverages, perfumes, chocolate, and other snacks, which are the main products demanded by international travelers. Oakland Duty Free is open every day. Opening and closing times vary according to flight schedules.

Holiday Inn Express & Suites Oakland-Airport: Located 0.6 miles from the airport. Free airport shuttle service is available. Breakfast is included in the price.

Hampton Inn & Suites Oakland Airport-Alameda: Located 2.5 miles from the airport. Free shuttle service to the airport is available from the hotel.

Courtyard by Marriott Oakland Airport: Located 1.8 miles from the airport. The hotel has a restaurant, fitness center, and meeting rooms.

SpringHill Suites by Marriott Oakland Airport: Located 0.8 miles from the airport. Free airport shuttle service is available. Breakfast is included in the price.

Home2 Suites by Hilton Alameda Oakland Airport: Located 1.2 miles from the airport. The hotel offers kitchen-equipped suites and is ideal for long-term stays.

Oakland International Airport Flights and Airlines

Oakland International Airport is the hub for Southwest Airlines. Many other airlines, including Alaska Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Spirit Airlines, Hawaiian Airlines, Allegiant Air, and Volaris, also use this airport.

Flights from the airport are mainly to cities within the US. Direct flights are available to popular destinations such as Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Seattle, San Diego, Chicago, Dallas, Denver, and the Hawaiian Islands. Additionally, international flights are operated to various tourist destinations in Mexico (Guadalajara, Morelia, Los Cabos), Central America (El Salvador), and seasonally to Europe (Azores).
