Newark Liberty International Airport is an international airport located in the city of Newark, New Jersey. This airport is approximately 8 miles from Manhattan. You can reach the airport directly via Interstate 78, the New Jersey Turnpike, and Route 1-9. There are direct flights to Newark Airport from destinations in Europe, South America, the Caribbean, and Asia. Nearly 50 million passengers use this airport annually.
When I first arrived in Newark, I thought of it as just a gateway to New York. Branch Brook Park transforms into a painting in the spring months with its cherry blossoms. It is home to one of the largest collections of cherry blossoms outside of Japan. The Newark Museum of Art, considered the cultural heart of the city, offers art galleries, science exhibits, and historical collections that will allow you to enjoy a few hours of your time. In the evening, the bustle around the New Jersey Performing Arts Center will make you feel that Newark is a city intertwined with art. If you choose Newark Liberty Airport when coming to New York, you will avoid the heavy JFK traffic in Manhattan. Newark Liberty Airport is both less crowded and closer to the city center. The airport offers a wide range of transportation options. AirTrain Newark operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to the airport. Travel within the terminal is free.
AirTrain Newark is located on NJ Transit’s Northeast Corridor Line and North Jersey Coast Line. From here, you can reach important hubs such as Newark Penn Station, Secaucus Junction, and New York Penn Station. From these stops, you can transfer to other train lines in Northern New Jersey, New York City, and Long Island.
NJ Transit routes 28, 37, 62, 67, and 107 serve Newark Airport. Northbound buses run to Newark city center, Newark Penn Station, and Irvington. Bus 28 runs regularly to Newark city center, Newark Broad Street Station, and Bloomfield. There are taxi stands in front of each terminal. Taxis are available 24 hours a day.

Newark Liberty Airport Terminal
There are three terminals at Newark Liberty Airport: Terminal A, Terminal B, and Terminal C. Each terminal serves different airlines. There are a total of 125 gates across the three terminals.
Terminal A is the newest terminal at Newark Liberty Airport. This terminal has 33 gates. JetBlue, Delta Air Lines, Air Canada, and American Airlines operate flights from this terminal. The first floor has check-in counters and security checkpoints. The second floor has shops and restaurants. Stores such as Hudson Booksellers and EJE Duty-Free operate in this terminal.
Terminal B is used for international flights. This terminal has three concourses. There are 10 gates in B1, 8 gates in B2, and 9 gates in B3. British Airways, Lufthansa, Air France, SAS, and many other international airlines operate flights from this terminal. Passport and immigration procedures are handled on the lower level of the terminal.
Terminal C is the hub for United Airlines and United Express. This terminal is used for both domestic and international flights. Terminal C has 68 gates. Terminal C is the largest terminal at the airport. There are three concourses in the terminal: C1, C2, and C3.
The free AirTrain is used for transfers between terminals. Each terminal has baggage claim, a lost and found office, disabled access, and family rooms. Some terminals have showers, sleep pods, and business centers. There are short- and long-term parking areas in front of each terminal.
Newark Liberty Airport Car Rental
If you want to explore New Jersey’s coastline and the peaceful valleys north of New York, you can rent a car right at Newark Liberty Airport. Newark is rich in places you can explore by car. You can take a ferry to Liberty State Park, the Statue of Liberty, and Ellis Island. Hoboken’s waterfront will enchant you with its views of Manhattan. Branch Brook Park is breathtaking in spring with its cherry blossom scenery reminiscent of Japan. You can easily reach Manhattan from the airport.
Car rental companies have offices at Newark Liberty Airport. Car rental companies operate at the Car Rental Center located between the 1st and 3rd floors of Parking Lot A. You can reach the parking area from Terminal A via the covered walkway. To get here from other terminals, you must first take the AirTrain to Terminal A.
Hertz, Avis, Enterprise, Alamo, Dollar, National, Payless, Sixt, Thrifty, and Budget operate at the car rental center. I strongly recommend making your reservation online before you arrive. This is because it is quite difficult to find an available car at the airport, especially during holiday periods. You can also rent your car at a more affordable price with an online reservation.

Terminal A: American Airlines Admirals Club, Delta Sky Club, and United Club serve this terminal. United Club is next to Gate A27 and is open from 5:00 a.m. to 9:15 p.m. Delta Sky Club is near Gate A8. American Airlines Admirals Club is located in the area after security. This VIP Lounge is open from 4:00 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.
Terminal B: The British Airways Lounge is located near Concourse B2 gates B50-B58. It is open from 4:30 AM to 8:00 PM and from 3:15 PM to 9:30 PM. The SAS Lounge is located near Concourse B3 gate B60. The SAS Lounge is open from 7:00 AM to 11:00 PM. The Lufthansa Senator Lounge is located next to Gate B68. This lounge is open daily from 12:30 p.m. to 9:45 p.m. The Delta Sky Club and Virgin Atlantic Lounge are located in Terminal B.
Terminal C: Terminal C has the United Polaris Lounge and United Lounge. The United Club is near Gate C74. It is open between 05:00 and 22:30. The United Polaris Lounge is next to Gate C120. This VIP Lounge is open between 05:00 and 22:30.
All VIP Lounge areas feature freshly prepared buffets, extensive beverage bars, high-speed internet, and work areas.
Some lounges have showers, sleep pods, and à la carte dining. Some lounges accept membership systems such as Priority Pass. Some lounges are only open to passengers with certain class tickets.
