The moment you set foot in Melbourne, you may be surprised by the size of the airport. Melbourne Airport is Australia’s second busiest airport. Melbourne Airport is 23 kilometers from Melbourne city center. Melbourne Airport is also known as Tullamarine Airport. This airport is located in the city of Melbourne in the state of Victoria.

There are four terminals at Melbourne Airport. The airport has one international terminal, two domestic terminals, and one low-cost domestic terminal. All terminals are within walking distance of each other in a single large complex. All terminals are connected by a pedestrian walkway.

There are both taxis and buses at the airport. There are taxi and bus stops in front of the terminals. The SkyBus service runs every 10 minutes, 24 hours a day, from the airport. This bus takes approximately 30-40 minutes to reach Southern Cross Station. Airport taxis operate 24 hours a day. No matter what time your flight is, you can reach the city center from the airport by taxi.

There are direct flights from Melbourne Airport to Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide, Auckland, Singapore, Denpasar, Hong Kong, and Shanghai.

Melbourne Airport Terminals

There are 4 terminals at Melbourne Airport: Terminal 1, Terminal 2, Terminal 3, and Terminal 4.

Melbourne Airport Terminal 1

Terminal 1 hosts Qantas domestic flights. Check-in counters are on the first floor, and baggage claim is on the ground floor. There are 16 gates in the terminal. Check-in, security, the food court, and the Qantas Lounge are on the first floor, while baggage claim is on the ground floor. Various parking options are available, including Qantas Valet parking and Business parking. This terminal is located at the north end of the airport. It is the last stop on the SkyBus route.

Melbourne Airport Terminal 2

This terminal is Melbourne’s gateway to the world. Terminal 2 has 20 gates. This terminal features works by Australian indigenous artists. Check-in, departures, and gates are located on the first floor. Lounges are located on the third floor.

For international flights, you must check in three hours before departure. Terminal 2 is a duty-free shopping paradise. Be prepared – there are stores such as Australian Produce Store, Amuse, and more. Places like Brunetti Classico and Pickett’s Deli & Rotisserie are open 24 hours a day.

Melbourne Airport Terminal 3

Terminal 3 is home to Virgin Australia. This terminal is used only for domestic flights. Venues such as Stomping Ground Brewery and Beer Hall and Biggie Smalls are located in this terminal. In the terminal, there is a comfortable waiting area on the mezzanine level after security.

Melbourne Airport Terminal 4

Jetstar, Rex Airlines, and Link Airways use this terminal for domestic flights. This terminal is smaller than the other terminals. Check-in and baggage drop-off are on the ground floor, while security and the lounge are on the first floor. The McDonald’s here is open 24 hours a day.

Melbourne Airport Car Rental

If you want to travel freely on Australia’s endless roads, you can rent a car as soon as you land at Melbourne Airport. There are car rental company offices at Melbourne Airport. The car rental offices are located on the ground floor of the T123 parking building opposite Terminal 2. Here, you will find offices for Avis, Budget, Enterprise, Europcar, Hertz, Redspot, and SIXT. You can reach this area via footbridges from Terminals 1, 2, and 3. After picking up your car keys from the office, you can immediately collect your car from the parking lot.

There are also car rental companies located near Melbourne Airport. Some companies offer a shuttle service. You can see if a shuttle service is available when making your reservation. I recommend making your reservation online. This way, you get the best prices and guarantee your car. Walk-ups are possible, but there is a risk of not finding a car, especially during busy periods. When making a reservation, you will need your driver’s license, passport, and credit card. It is easy to leave the airport by car. You will be directly connected to the city and surrounding areas via major roads such as the Tullamarine Freeway and M2.

Once you have rented your car, you have a wonderful route ahead of you. The state of Victoria is incredibly beautiful. The Great Ocean Road offers a spectacular coastal journey. The Yarra Valley is famous for its vineyards and natural beauty. If you drive towards Phillip Island, you can see the penguin parades.

Melbourne Airport VIP Lounge

Melbourne Airport has both Membership Lounges and Open Access Lounges. Most VIP Lounges are located in Terminal 2.

Terminal 1 VIP Lounge

The Qantas Domestic Lounge is located in this terminal. You can access the lounge area after passing through security. It is open between 05:45 and 21:45.

Terminal 2 VIP Lounge

This is the international terminal. Therefore, there are many VIP Lounges in Terminal 2. Plaza Premium Lounge is near Gate 9. Its operating hours are 08:30-23:00. Marhaba Lounge is between Gate 9 and Gate 11. This lounge is open 24 hours a day. Aspire Lounge is on the ground floor. It is open from 07:00-00:45. Air New Zealand Lounge is on the ground floor in the area after security. The Singapore Airlines Lounge is located on the first floor. It operates according to flight schedules. The Qantas International Business Lounge is located on the first floor after security. It is open from 04:45 to 22:15. The Qantas First Class Lounge is located between Gate 9 and Gate 11. It is open from 05:30 to 22:15. The Emirates Lounge is near Gate 10. It is open from 05:15 to 22:30. The AMEX Lounge is located on the first floor after security. The Etihad Airways Lounge is located on the third floor after security.

Terminal 3 VIP Lounge

The Virgin Lounge is located on the mezzanine floor after security.

Terminal 4 VIP Lounge

Rex Lounge is located on the ground floor. It is located at Gate 30. It is open Monday-Friday from 6:00 AM to 7:00 PM, Saturday from 6:00 AM to 12:00 PM, and Sunday from 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM.

Priority Pass members can use many lounges free of charge. Lounge areas offer complimentary snacks, hot and cold beverages, Wi-Fi, work-friendly tables, and shower facilities. Some lounge areas offer additional amenities such as quiet relaxation areas and meeting rooms.

There are no hotels connected to the terminals at Melbourne Airport. However, there are several hotels directly opposite the airport.

PARKROYAL Melbourne Airport: PARKROYAL is directly opposite Terminal 2. You can walk to this hotel. The hotel also offers hourly accommodation options. If you have a long layover, you can wait for your flight at the hotel. The hotel has 24/7 room service. This hotel is ideal for those waiting for a connecting flight.

Holiday Inn Melbourne Airport: It is only 400 meters away from the terminals. There is a 24-hour shuttle service. This hotel has Park, Stay & Go packages. You can park your car in the hotel’s parking lot.

Novotel Melbourne Airport: Novotel is right next to Terminal 4. It is a 5-minute walk to the terminals. Ibis Styles Melbourne Airport: It is right next to the airport. You can reach the hotel with a 5-10 minute walk.
