Chicago O’Hare International Airport (IATA: ORD) is located in the US state of Illinois, approximately 17 miles northwest of downtown Chicago. This airport is one of the world’s busiest and most important air transportation hubs. It is not just an airport but more like a small city. Chicago O’Hare International Airport has four terminals (Terminals 1, 2, 3, and 5). There are numerous concourses within these terminals.

Terminal 1 (Concourse B) is the main hub for United Airlines. Some United Express flights also operate from here. International flights by some Star Alliance partners, such as All Nippon Airways (ANA) and Lufthansa, also operate from this airport. Terminal 2 (Concourse E, F): This terminal hosts flights by airlines such as Air Canada, Alaska Airlines, Delta Air Lines, and JetBlue. Some United Express flights also operate from this terminal.

Terminal 3 (Concourse G, H, K, L): This is American Airlines’ main hub. American Eagle’s regional flights and operations by some oneworld alliance members such as Iberia and Japan Airlines are also conducted from this terminal. Terminal 5 (Concourse M): This is O’Hare’s main international terminal. Low-cost airlines such as Southwest Airlines and Frontier Airlines use this terminal. In addition, all international airlines such as British Airways, Turkish Airlines, Emirates, Qatar Airways, KLM, and Air France use this terminal.

Transportation between terminals and to the Multi-Modal Facility (MMF – car rental center and economy parking lots) is provided by the free Airport Transit System (ATS) within the airport. All terminals feature check-in counters, baggage claim carousels, numerous TSA security checkpoints (including TSA PreCheck and CLEAR), ground transportation connections, a wide range of dining options, and shops. Free Wi-Fi internet access is also available throughout the airport for passengers.

Car Parking at Chicago O’Hare Airport

Main Garages (Hourly & Daily – Lot A, B, C): These are multi-level indoor parking garages located within walking distance of Terminals 1, 2, and 3. Lot A is for hourly parking and Lot B & C are for daily parking. The first 30 minutes are free. Fees: 0-1 hour $3, 1-2 hours $6, 2-3 hours $10, 3-4 hours $14, 4-8 hours $36, daily maximum $79.

International Terminal Parking (Lot D): This is an indoor parking garage located near Terminal 5. It is suitable for both short- and long-term parking. Fee: $3 per hour, daily maximum $43.

Economy Parking Lots (Economy Lots F, G, H): These parking areas are farther from the terminal building but offer more affordable rates. Both open and covered parking is available. You can easily reach the terminals from these lots via the free Airport Transit System (ATS). Fee: $3 per hour, maximum daily rate of $16-43.

Car Rental at Chicago O’Hare Airport

All car rental companies at Chicago O’Hare are located within the Multi-Modal Facility (MMF) on airport grounds. You can easily reach the MMF from all terminals via the free Airport Transit System (ATS) trains. The counters and vehicle fleets of all major national and international car rental companies, such as Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, Hertz, National, Sixt, and Thrifty, are located at this facility. Most companies’ offices are open 24 hours a day, every day of the week. You can pick up your rental car from the parking area within the MMF.

Public Transportation at Chicago O’Hare Airport

CTA Blue Line (‘L’ Train): You can travel economically and quickly from O’Hare Airport to downtown Chicago (Loop) by taking this train. The Blue Line station is located on the lower level of Terminals 1, 2, and 3 and is directly connected by pedestrian tunnels. You can transfer to the Blue Line by taking the ATS from Terminal 5 to Terminals 1, 2, or 3. Trains run 24/7. The journey to the city center takes 40-45 minutes.

Metra (North Central Service): Metra commuter trains departing from O’Hare Transfer Station transport passengers to Union Station in downtown Chicago and to the northern suburbs. You can reach this station via MMF or by shuttle from the terminals.

Pace Buses: Pace commuter buses serve many suburbs surrounding O’Hare. Bus stops are located at MMF and on the Arrivals level of Terminal 5.

Regional Shuttle Services: Numerous private shuttle companies offer shared or private transfer services to downtown Chicago, Midway Airport, surrounding states (Wisconsin, Indiana), and hotels.

Taxi: Taxi stands are located in designated areas at the arrivals level exit of each terminal. Taxis operate 24/7.

Uber/Lyft: For ride-hailing services such as Uber and Lyft, there are designated pickup zones (Rideshare Pickup Zones) on the Departures level of each terminal, corresponding to gate numbers. For Terminal 5, there is a separate area on the Arrivals level (lower level).

VIP Lounges at Chicago O’Hare Airport

United Airlines United Club: Terminal 1 (multiple locations in Concourses B and C), Terminal 2 (Concourse F). This lounge area is available to United Airlines and Star Alliance elite members and eligible ticket holders.
