Salzburg is a city situated in western Austria, at the foot of the Alps. The historic Altstadt, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, will enchant you with its Baroque architecture. Every corner of this city is a stage. Walking right along the banks of the Salzach River, in the shadow of historic domes and towers, I felt as if I were wandering through a musical theater.

The city’s undisputed star is Hohensalzburg Castle, whose construction began in 1077. You can reach this magnificent structure one of Europe’s largest and best-preserved medieval castles via a short funicular ride from Festungsberg Hill. As you walk down Getreidegasse Street, you’ll find the yellow-painted house where Mozart was born in 1756. Inside the museum, there are unique musical instruments from Mozart’s childhood, such as his violin and the clavichord on which he composed The Magic Flute.

The Mirabell Gardens, meanwhile, reflect the city’s romantic side. While spending time in these gardens where the “Do-Re-Mi” scene from The Sound of Music was filmed you’ll feel as though you’re right in the movie. The Salzburg Festival is held during the summer months. This festival has been held continuously since 1920.

Salzburg Airport is Austria’s second-largest airport. Approximately 2 million passengers use this airport each year. Salzburg Airport offers flights to destinations such as Paris, Belgrade, London, Antalya, Hurghada, Amsterdam, Barcelona, Bristol, Liverpool, Copenhagen, Rhodes, Stockholm, Dubai, Riyadh, Birmingham, Copenhagen, Istanbul, and many others.

You can quickly reach the city center from the airport by bus. Bus 2 operates between the main train station and the airport. This journey takes approximately 23 minutes. Route 10 connects the city center to the airport via the Maxglan district. The stops for both bus routes are located in front of Terminal 1. There are also taxi stands in front of the terminal building.

Salzburg Airport Terminal

Salzburg Airport has two terminals. Both terminals feature a simple and straightforward design.

Terminal 1 is the main terminal at Salzburg Airport. This terminal is open year-round. The terminal building has three floors. The ground floor houses the arrivals area, car rental counters, and baggage claim carousels. The first floor features the main check-in hall, security and passport control checkpoints, and boarding gates. Most of the cafes, restaurants, and duty-free shops are also located on this floor. Terminal 1 has a total of 26 check-in counters. The second floor features both an observation deck open to visitors free of charge and a Business Lounge. From the observation deck, you can see both Hohensalzburg Castle and the Alpine scenery at the same time.

Terminal 2, officially known as the Amadeus Terminal, is open during the winter season. This terminal operates during peak charter flight periods. It is typically used on Sundays during the ski season, from December through March, to handle the high volume of charter flights. The terminal has nine check-in counters and four gates.
