The heart of the city is Hlavná ulica. This cobbled pedestrian street is lined on both sides with Baroque, Gothic and Art Nouveau façades. When you sit in one of the cafés under the shade of the plane trees, you lose track of time as you listen to the melodies of the musical fountain. St. Elisabeth’s Cathedral is the city’s undisputed symbol. This magnificent structure, which holds the title of Europe’s easternmost Gothic cathedral, took a full two centuries to complete, from 1378 to 1508. When you climb to the top of the tower, you can even see the distant mountains.

Right next to the cathedral complex are St. Michael’s Chapel and the City Tower. The East Slovak Museum houses over 500,000 historical artefacts. In the museum’s garden stands a wooden church dating from the 17th century. The Kunsthalle, meanwhile, is a contemporary art gallery converted from a former indoor swimming pool.

Šafárikovo Square and the Immaculate Conception Column are also among the city’s most iconic photo spots. The Košice Peace Marathon, held on the first Sunday in October, is one of Europe’s oldest marathons. The Tokaj wine region is just 30 km from the city.

Košice International Airport is situated in the Barca district, to the south of the city. Košice Airport is just 6 km from St. Elisabeth’s Cathedral. Getting from the airport to the city centre is extremely easy. Košice Airport is Slovakia’s second busiest airport. Nearly one million passengers use this airport annually.

Ryanair, Wizz Air, LOT Polish Airlines, Austrian Airlines and Swiss International Air Lines operate flights from this airport. There are regular flights from Košice Airport to destinations such as Prague, Warsaw, Zurich, Vienna, Dublin, London and Liverpool. During the summer season, charter flights are also operated to Cyprus, Egypt and various Mediterranean destinations.

Košice Airport has a single terminal. The terminal is divided into two sections: Non-Schengen and Schengen.

Bus number 23 operates between the airport and the city centre. This bus departs from the stop in front of the terminal building. This route also stops at the coach station and Košice Hlavná stanica. The journey takes approximately 20-25 minutes. Taxi ranks are located immediately to the right of the terminal exit.

Košice Airport Terminal

Košice Airport has a single terminal. The terminal building is two-storey. The ground floor of the terminal is entirely dedicated to arrivals procedures. After disembarking from the aircraft, you will go through passport control. There is no need for passport control on Schengen flights. You will then proceed to the baggage carousels. The carousels are on the ground floor and are located near the terminal exit. After collecting your luggage, you will go through customs. In the arrivals hall, there are car hire desks, ATMs and a currency exchange bureau.

The first floor is dedicated to departures. There are approximately 20 check-in desks on this floor.

Check-in opens 3 hours before the flight time for international flights and 2 hours before the flight time for domestic flights. After the check-in counters, you proceed to the security checkpoint. There are two separate lanes here.

In the post-security area, there are duty-free shops, souvenir shops, restaurants and cafés. Schengen and Non-Schengen gates are in separate areas. Follow the directional signs according to your gate number.

Košice Airport Car Rental

Hiring a car at Košice Airport is very easy. Car hire offices are located in the arrivals hall on the ground floor. Once you have collected your luggage, proceed through customs. You will see the car hire offices right in front of you. Avis, Hertz, Wheego, Budget, DKauto, Europcar, Sixt, Enterprise and Prestige operate within the terminal.

Once you have completed the car hire formalities inside the terminal, you will collect your hired vehicle from the car park in front of the terminal. The car park where the hire cars are located is right in front of the terminal. You can reach the car park area in a 3-4 minute walk.

There are some fantastic routes to explore by car in Košice. The city centre is just 6 km from the airport. The Tokaj wine region is approximately 30 km away. You can reach the Slovak Paradise National Park after a 45-50-minute drive. Get into your car at the airport. Head south on the E58 motorway and reach the Tokaj wine region within 30 minutes. If you travel 45 km east, you can explore the unspoilt nature of the Zemplén region near the Hungarian border. Visit the wine cellars in this area and sample the local cheeses.

Košice Airport VIP Lounge

There is one VIP Lounge at Košice Airport: the Business Lounge. This VIP Lounge is located on the departures level after passing through security. The Business Lounge is situated near Gates 5 and 6. The lounge opens and closes at different times on weekdays and weekends. On weekdays, it is open from 03:00 to 18:00. You can enter the lounge by paying a fee at the entrance. Priority Pass, LoungeKey and Diners Club members do not need to pay.

Inside the lounge, there are hot and cold drinks, light snacks, magazines, free Wi-Fi, a television, air conditioning and a telephone. A small but peaceful space, the Business Lounge is an ideal retreat to catch your breath during busy periods at the terminal.
